Tourism arrival numbers continue to climb in Samoa

Visiting Friends and Relatives - VFR still dominate the tourist arrival numbers for Samoa representing a 49 percent share of the market.

The latest report from the Samoa Tourism Authority showed January (2010) visitors’ arrival increased by 7.3 percent compared to January 2009.

The increase is mainly due to the significant increase in the number of visitors from Asian Countries at 89.8% plus visitors from three main markets which are New Zealand at 5.6 percent, Australia at 21.6 percent and American Samoa at 7.2 percent.

The Visiting Friends and Relatives market showed a considerable increase of 24.1 percent compared to January 2009, as more families traveled to visit relatives and spend the festive season with relatives in Samoa. Holiday visitors decreased as some are still uncertain to visit following last years' Tsunami disaster.

New Zealand brought in the majority of VFR and Holiday visitors with 47 percent and 43 percent respectively. The Business, Sports and Other Purposes all recorded significant increases compared to January 2009 with a total of 25 percent share for the period under review
