Special Weather Bulletin Number Eight (8) for Samoa

ISSUED BY SAMOA METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES AT 11:00 A.M (LOCAL TIME) SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2010
 
STORM WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR OPEN COASTAL WATERS TO THE SOUTH OF UPOLU.
GALE WARNING IS NOW CANCELLED FOR THE EAST AND NORTHERN SIDE OF UPOLU BUT IT IS STILL IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTHERN SIDE AND HIGHLANDS.
GALE WATCH THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY IN FORCE FOR SAVAII IS NOW CANCELLED.
HIGH WIND ADVISORY is now in effect for rest of Upolu and southeast of Savaii.  
Flood Advisory remains in effect for Upolu.
 
(i) Tropical Cyclone RENE was relocated at about 163 nautical miles east of Apia or 133 nautical miles south-southeast of Aleipata at 7.00 am this morning.
(ii) TC Rene is moving south and away from its previous forecast track at 10 mph expecting to continue moving away from Upolu to the southwest towards  Tonga waters.
(iii) For Upolu: for the southern side south to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with high gust at times and rest of Upolu southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts at times. Southeast to southerly winds of 40-50 mph with gust up to 60 mph for some areas of the southern side and over highlands. Occasional showers with rainy period will continue and heavy falls are expected.
(iv) Open Waters South of Upolu – Southwest winds of 50 -65 mph turning west to northwest tonight with winds of 30-50 mph. Storm surge of 16-18  feet at seas beyond 50 nautical miles from coastal line and 10-12 at seas close to the lagoon and will affect some of the  east and southern coastal beaches.
(v)  FOR SAVAII: Southwest to west winds of 10 to 20  mph. Scattered showers with possible higher gusts at times.
(vi) Coastal Waters to the north and northwest o Savaii: Southwest to west winds of 10 to 20 mph. Poor visibility in showers with swells up to 8-10 feet.
