There may not be a more affordable, eco-friendly, and healthier means of
exploring Samoa’s coast and interior. Whereas travelling by car or bus only
gives you a snapshot of Samoa, biking provides a closer and more intimate view
of the Samoan landscape and village life. The roads are well-paved and except
for an occasional but avoidable pothole, a safe and smooth ride can be had for
cyclists of all levels.
Think it’s too hot to bike in Samoa? As long as you have
sunnies, water and take advantage of the fresh water swimming pools surrounding
the islands you have nothing to worry about. Just be sure to ask the village
for permission before you take a swim. Family owned markets are scattered along
the main roads which offer refreshing coconuts and other fresh fruits that are
in season.
The roads of southern Upolu and all of Savaii have very little
traffic, which means you will have the roads all to yourself. Don’t worry
though you will not be alone. Expect to be greeted by every villager you pass
with warm smiles and enthusiastic waves. Just be sure to wave and smile
back!
Samoa’s diverse accommodations, ranging from Beach Fales to
Deluxe Resorts, are scattered all throughout the islands and make for an easy
multi-day trip. Pack light, stretch your legs and pedal your way through
paradise.
